4 games are played on Friday night
and, again, on Saturday. |
Sports play an important part in life at Black Forest Academy. The teams compete against DODs (Department of Defense) schools. January is basketball month, with BFA hosting a different team for three of the weekends. Friday night basketball finds everyone in the BFA/mission community out to see BFA play. The past two Friday nights we have attended and cheered the team.

New, awesome, scoreboard |
As we walked home Smitty told me how he and the other men in maintenance had affected those ball games. The old scoreboard had been replaced with a new one, creating the need for removal of a cumbersome board, and necessitating moving of the new board down several flights of stairs, and setting up scaffolding in the gym. The maintenance crew also assisted the man who did the final installation.
Along the two sides of the gym are a number of windows which open via a motor, with the flip of a switch. The motors have seen many hours of repair and upkeep by the crew.
The walls of the gym had been covered in rugs as protection for bodies which slammed into them. Those walls have been scraped and re-covered with new cushioning material. Guess who did the work?

Windows, outside shades, and grey
wall covering, all repaired by Smitty
and the crew! |
Outside the south windows are a series of roladens-shades-used to keep the sun out of the gym when the weather turns warm, and preventing unwanted 'light pollution'. Those shades rise automatically when the wind gusts. At least, they are supposed to rise. Smitty and others on the maintenance crew have worked to keep the mechanisms working properly.

Even the 4th & 5th grade "floor cleaner" boys
benefit from the renovations by maintenance! |
Smitty has also fixed switches, retrieved balls from the ceiling, and replaced lights. Wow, so many things that no one realized, but all important to keep the gym operational. Maintenance-the unsung heroes of BFA! Go Falcons!
Way to go, Pop!
