In CS Lewis’ book The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, the children had an encounter with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver. Lucy asked if Aslan is safe. Mr. Beaver’s response:
“Safe?...Don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? …
’Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
(C.S. Lewis, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (1950), pp. 75-6)
How often I have considered the meaning of that passage on this road to ministry at Black Forest Academy. This week we have experienced Mr. Beaver’s words.
We arrived in Kandern late Monday, November 1. The sun shone brightly, setting the fall foliage ablaze. The road into town carried just one lane north and one lane south. Kandern rested quietly as the town folk observed All Souls by taking flowers to the local cemeteries. Such a contrast to the noise and bustle and chaos of Orange County! In spite of the peacefulness of our surroundings, we experienced fear of the unknown. Soon two very friendly women arrived at our little room to provide sheets, blankets, and comfort in the form of conversation. God may call us to do what scares us, but He always provides the grace to do what He asks.
Our first purchases at a German market. We needed our grocery bags here! |
Each time we have gone to meet with someone new we have sensed that old apprehension sneaking in. However, each time we can’t speak German or need some answer God has come through with someone to walk along side us and give us just the encouragement we needed, usually the very ones we have feared meeting!

The BFA staff has met with us on numerous occasions the last three days to help us better understand how they operate and how we fit in. Smitty spent several hours in maintenance to learn that he will be an important part of that team, and he doesn’t need to bring his tools. I have spoken with three staff in the department that provides support to students through individualized learning assistance. We also visited the elementary school where there may be an opening for a teacher. Dinners with missionary families have been overwhelming in the quality of information and the willingness of the families to share experience and to encourage us on our way.
Elementary school hallway. Brought tears to my eyes! |
Our time in Kandern this trip will be short, but the value of being here to meet with BFA staff, to assemble with the students, and to acquaint ourselves with the town can’t be measured in time. We thank God that He calls us to be more than we are and then provides all the courage and goodness we need to make it happen.
Beautiful, beautiful, pictures.
