Todtnauer Wasserfalls

Our lives the past eight days have revolved around setting up the apartment and processing through red tape.  Today we wanted an adventure.  Throwing caution to the winds, we drove the back roads to the village of Aftersteg, north and east of Kandern.  The adventure began with the drive itself as roads around here are marked irregularly with the major town and the next town on the route.   Blink and we may miss the correct turn.

After parking, we walked about half a mile to view falls.  Wanting more, we hiked up the trail which consisted of a combination of stair-type steps and trail.  The falls drop some 328 feet, but in a series of cascades rather than one enormous flow.  Bridges crossed over the falls for better viewing.    Every time we would get to one bridge, there seemed to be another just farther on.

One German woman, coming down from the top with her family, asked me, "Kommen Sie aus Todtnau?" ("Are you coming from Todtnau?")   While I attempt to speak and read German, I have not understood it spoken!  I felt so encouraged!

At the top we lunched on bratwurst and apple soda at a little "kiosk" .  The German proprietor was quite surprised to learn that we had come from California.   He had learned English in New Zealand!

On our trip home we stopped at a flower field to pick and purchase some gladiolas and sunflowers.  Here, fields full of flowers have a stand with small knives and a coin box.   Stem prices are posted; the buyer is on his/her own.  Made for a lovely ending to a stunningly picturesque adventure!
