Advent

Advent-the coming ....

The dictionary defines advent as 'the coming of some notable person, a season of the Christian church, the coming and second coming of Christ'.

Before moving to Germany I ignored Advent.  I busied myself with preparations for the day of Christmas.  Rushing about in busyness, seeking gifts and just the right foods.   No time to think, just do!

Germans, in contrast, observe Advent.  A five candle wreath, lit each Sunday of Advent and then on Christmas Day offers time for reflection.  Foods, lights, Christmas markets all focus on the coming of the Christ child, with lots of time for considering, waiting.  The Babe often is not found in the creche until the Day of Christmas which gives opportunity for anticipation, and remembering. Even the ubiquitous stollen is made to look like the Baby wrapped in swaddling cloths, a reminder of The Coming.

This year focusing on Advent through my devotions has led me to a deeper appreciation of the Miracle of that first Christmas.   No rushing about to purchase food and gifts, more savoring the morning sun rise and the glimmer of the stars.  Time spent enjoying friendships and opportunities to hear others' stories.  Stopping to breath in the fragrance of Christmas baking and to hear the words and harmonies of carols. Even familiar passages of the Story find richness in the time spent meditating.

The parallels between the dangerous journey of Joseph and Mary and the treacherous migration of thousands of refugees this year cannot be ignored, yet, I am humbled by the tender and gentle hand of the Father, and how He makes all come together in a mystery I will never understand.  "How deep the Father's love for us..."

Heavenly host praising God and saying "Glory to God in the highest...(Luke 2:13-14)." Time for wonder.

The simple shepherds, first in fear, then in awe saying, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us (Luke 2:15)."  Time for reflection.

Wise men, traveling for weeks following a star found the baby with his mother, "and they fell to the ground and worshipped Him (Matthew 2:11)."  Time for adoration.

How could all this be?  More questions than I have answers.  Yet a deeper reverence for my heavenly Father.  And a peace, knowing nothing can snatch me from His hand.  The terrors and trials of this world do not compare to His sovereignty over them.

On this Christmas I cease striving and enjoy the time to contemplate joy, humility, and awe of shepherds and wise men who found Him long ago, appreciating the Gift, until He comes again.
