Spring has crept slowly up the Kander valley, beginning in late March. The daffodils heralded the coming, tulips accented the change, and apple trees then began to bloom. For several weeks I watched the transformation going on around me, hating to think that the daffodils and tulips would soon be gone.
This morning I took a long walk in the woods and realized that what had happened in March was only the prelude for a glorious symphony, Spring. Now iris, columbine, and lily of the valley erupt in many gardens. The peonies, lilacs, and rhododendrons bring bright splashes of color to the varied shades of green.
In the forest and meadows the wild flowers are everywhere. They surprise the eye with vast expanses of yellow, or tiny spots of purple. So many flowers I have never seen before; so many I will have to classify and discover the names.
Walking home, I listened for the bird songs and marveled that so varied an orchestra accompanyed the visual music of the woods. What a lovely, peaceful place. I'm thankful for the leisurely way in which spring has arrived here. I can take deeps breaths of the beauty and enjoy the slow crawl up the valley. If this is just a taste of heaven, wow, I am blessed!
